BOOK REVIEW: Legacy of Ash by Matthew Ward

Hello, hello. It's been a while since I wrote a book review on here. April was a hectic month and I barely read anything. However, we've started off May with a bang. I've already shared my review on GOODREADS but I decided to do it here as well.

Before I start, I want to thank NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with the eARC which I got approved for after I bought the book since it came out earlier in the UK. READ MORE

Self-publishing is a learning curve

J. F. Johns self-published her first novel in 2016 when she was twenty-two years old and is currently working on her sixth novel. Self-publishing has become a big and more certain way for authors to publish their work if they don’t want to go through the tedious and nerve-wracking process of traditional publishing.  READ MORE

MINI REVIEWS: 2 amazing 5-star reads about mental health and LGBTQ+

Hi guys, I've decided to come on here with two mini-reviews since I have two 5-star books that I haven't talked about yet. They are YA contemporaries that I absolutely LOVED and I didn't know how to express my feelings for them. That's why they are short and messy.

K-pop news: #WeStandWithTheRose

By Yuli Atta

Hey guys, today I'm going to share what has currently been going on with one of my favourite K-bands, The Rose. Initially, I wanted to share multiple stories but this one became too long so this is it. The way I'm doing this is by first showing you the unbiased story and then sharing my opinion on it.

The Rose files for termination of their contract with J&Star Company

The K-pop band The Rose has filed for a termination of their contract with the company J & Star Company after not being paid for 3 years.

TOMB RAIDER: GAME VS FILM

It is common knowledge that if a book becomes famous enough, it gets adapted into a film or a TV show. Most of the time these adaptations aren’t even good according to a lot of the people who have already read the book but at the same time, the ones who have watched the screen adaptation may decide to read the novel as well. There are even a lot of memes online, showing how big the differences between the screen adaptation and the original itself are. One of those memes shows the tip of an iceberg above water and how much bigger it actually is underwater which is a great metaphor for the changes made in the film. So, what about games and their screen adaptations? Are there any differences? Is the meme just as valid for games and their films as it is for books?

K-DRAMA REVIEW: Tell Me What You Saw

Tell Me What You Saw is a South Korean drama with thriller and crime investigation elements that's directed by Lee Jong Hyeong. While the synopsis given on My Drama List and Viki doesn't make it sound like anything exceptional to other dramas, it's actually a very well-written and executed story with superb acting, that kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time.

Knight's Honour: Game Script (assessment for university)

Outline:
Knight’s Honour is a single-player game about a boy who wants to become a knight but comes across a lot of obstacles, one of them being that he has to work for the man who killed his father. It’s called Knight’s Honour because during his time as an apprentice he witnesses a lot of questionable things these supposedly people of honour do. It is a story about personal growth and it is set in a fictional world where knighthood is a profession just as much as carpentry. This is a fantasy-adventure RPG set in a medieval fictional world with a linear-branching narrative. The story begins with Darius, the main character, who is set on revenge. He wants to kill sir Fray, the antagonist, because he killed Darius’ father. During his journey to achieve his goal Darius encounters sir Barty who is the trickster and the Golden Lady who is the mentor. The core mechanics allow Darius to run, ride, fight, fence, talk, take and use items. In the end, Darius realises that sir Fray isn’t the main antagonist, the one responsible for his father’s death is the Crown. The game ends with a cut scene in which Darius says that he is going to take down the Crown in order to get justice for every family who has lost a member because of them. The intended audience is young adult and the publishing platform is PC.

All censorship is wrong

All censorship is wrong. Censorship curtails and limits free speech and artistic expression. It is a tool of those in power who seek to impose their morals, views and values on to the individual.
(This was the topic for a script for a debate that I had to write.)

Reflective log week 8

I didn't heart from the bookstores I emailed, asking if they'd agree for an interview.

This week I approached two people who work with Netherland Dwarf rabbits and asked them if they'd do an interview with me. They both agreed but I managed to interview only one of them (I called them on Facebook) and I haven't heard from the other one in days.

My third and last backup plan is a feature about how Falmouth students are dealing with the quarantine and social distancing. I haven't talked to any yet because I've decided to wait just a bit more in case I hear from the bunny breeder.

My problem with the new feature idea is that I've no idea what kind of pictures I should use but I will ask the people I interview to take some for me which would be their interpretation of the situation.

One positive this week was that Melissa and I finally recorded the podcast, I wrote the intro for it and we have an image. Now she just needs to edit it.

The plan for next week is to find a way to do my feature and start working on my the rest of the assessment.

Isabelle Weall Biography (assessment for uni, all based on information found on the Internet)

(This is a piece I had to write from my creative non-fiction class. I had to make it creative and entertaining while still keeping to the facts. I've included my sources as I do NOT own anything in this piece.)
Isabelle Weall is not like other sixteen-year olds. She was born on the 29th of June 2003.
She is exceptional because she is a quadruple amputee. Izzy lost both her arms and legs when she was seven years old after contracting meningitis septicemia. She suffered a heart attack and organ failure and her parents were told that she had less than one per cent chance of survival. Despite all odds, she made it.

Currently watching: New to me K-dramas

Hiya guys, today I'm talking about the two K-dramas I recently started watching. I'm behind on writing about the dramas I've been following but I'm getting there. Today I'm going to talk about the 2 newest ones that I've started and then I'm going to make a list of dramas that I want to watch after them.

The weirdest BL drama I've watched so far

Hi guys! Today I'm talking about a certain BL drama I recently finished watching and how weird it was.

For those of you who don't know, BL stands for 'boys love'. I don't know how popular of a genre it is if you aren't looking specifically for it but it seems to have a big market in Thailand because they come out with multiple dramas a year. I recently finished TharnType and Until We Meet Again which aired last year and were completed early this year. I loved both and I've watched many more before. I'm currently watching Why R U? wich I'm obsessed with and 2gether which I'm also obsessed with. Thre's another currently ongoing show called My Engineer that I'm yet to watch but it's on my list.

Murder over Bong - a creatively retold true story from 2018

It was another normal and boring day at work. I was surrounded yet again by dusty piles of clothes and I was very hungry. It was around 1pm and we had two more hours before the last break for the day. I knew that I should have eaten more at lunch but it was so hot in this small room full of clothes and people that I couldn’t have been bothered with it. On top of that, I was almost out of water.

BOOK REVIEW: Thorn by Intisar Khanani

By Yuli Atta

Thank you to Readers First and the publisher for providing me with an early copy of the book.

Soooo, I don't know how to review this book. I didn't expect to like it at all but I actually fell in love with it. It's certainly on the 3.75 side rather than a solid 4-star rating but still. I enjoyed it a lot.

BOOK REVIEW: Th Empire of Gold by S. A. Chakraborty

GOODREADS

Actual rating 4.40 because while I found the ending satisfying, I would've loved to see a few things done slightly differently but I will talk about that in a minute.

Oh my god, where do I even start?

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with the eARC of this book. It made me very happy and means a lot to me.

I have to admit, I didn't expect to enjoy this book as much as I did because I had a kind of a rough ride with the first book and I listened to the second book at x2.3. I feel like that's when I actually got invested in the story because I remember missing the characters after finishing The Kingdom of Copper. When I got the email that my wish was granted I was so, so excited!

Master of Sorrows by Justin Call

This started out well enough and it was actually interesting to me for a long time. However, as I didn't see the plot progressing for 300 pages I gradually lost interest. I got to a point where I skipped 40 pages and I didn't miss a thing.

Reflective log week 7

During the reading week, I planned two podcast ideas, recorded the interviews for them and interviewed John Jarrold who is a literary agent. I did reach out to somebody else before him but she didn't reply, however, John Jarrold has represented many big names in the fantasy genre and he has also been an editor for many other big fantasy names so I'm glad I interviewed him. I asked him for a picture because the interview was over the phone.

The final idea for the podcast is to do it about not finishing books and why some people feel better about putting down their books than others.

Sunday 1 March 2020

Reflective log week 6

I asked C. G. Drews if I could interview her but unfortunately, she said she was busy with her writing. My backup plan is to approach a few literary agents during the reading week and hopefully, one of them will reply.

For my feature, I decided to either interview a woman in Truro who is breeding bunnies as a hobby or interview the people at the used bookshop in Falmouth. I'm not sure about the images just yet. The bunny idea would be easier to get photographs for because I could take pictures of the bunnies themselves but for the bookshop, I'm worried the lady wouldn't allow me to take a picture of her behind her desk.

Reflective log weeks 1 - 5

For a long time, I struggled with coming up with ideas and would constantly change them. I had a few ideas in the beginning that, I thought, were good, however, it tuned out they have to be either local or just suitable for Truthfal. I had to change a few of them and I knew what I wanted to do only for the podcast and the advice piece.

During those first few weeks, I didn't work on anything, I was trying to figure out what to do for the feature and live event while focusing on my creative writing because I needed to have my first draft finished by the end of March.

I planned to interview C. G. Drews, the author of A thousand perfect notes and The boy who steals houses because I've spoken to her on a few occasions and she's made it clear she accepts interview requests and for the podcast, Melissa and I were going to talk about K-pop.

BOOK REVIEW; The Kingdom of Copper by S. A. Chakraborty

(You can also find this review on GOODREADS.)

This review will also be just my rambles that I hope end up making sense.

I wasn't completely sold on the whole plot for a while and the book was a solid 3-star read for me until the middle and after that, especially the last 200 just raised the stakes and my rating because, oo my god, the DRAMA, the fights, the DANGER and that ENDING!

BOOK REVIEW: The City of Brass by S. A. Chakraborty

(You can also find this review on GOODREADS.)

Finally, after God only knows how long I have finished a book and not just a book but the City of Brass itself.

At first, I thought of writing a proper review for it but as I kept reading I just realized I didn't know how to put everything into words so it could all make sense. Instead, I'll present you with my rambles and hope they make at least a little bit of sense.

'Social Media improves your life.'

Social Media plays a big role in our daily lives. The first thing we do when we wake up in the morning is checking our phone for the newest events in the world, check Facebook for the most recent news from our friends and family, scroll through Instagram's amazing pictures and add to our Snapchat story that we are now awake. We are constantly online, documenting every part of our lives and the last thing we do before bed is to check all the social media accounts again as if we haven't been on our phones the whole day.

Does it really help us in any way? With social media come a lot of pros and cons.

For example, it can help people who are introverted, shy or suffer from social anxiety connect with others through Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and even YouTube. Not having to go out in order to find friends is a great advantage for people who feel highly anxious even at the thought of it.

It's no secret that a lot of big YouTubers started their channels as a way to deal with depression. Look at Lilly Singh, also known as Superwoman, who is one of the richest and most popular YouTubers with thirteen million subscribers.

The advantages of having a lot of followers on your social media accounts are countless. One of them is that you can start and/or grow your own business from it. For example, a lot of bookstagram accounts (Instagram for books) use their following to open their own shops for candles, cosmetics and subscription boxes with bookish themes, a lot of people get sponsored by publishing houses to just share a photo of a book they got sent. The same goes for fashion and food accounts.

In other words, some people make a lot of money from showing off their hobbies, they receive a lot of love and support which motivates them to expand their platforms even more.

Look at all of the famous YouTubers such a Logan Paul, Pewdiepie and Liza Koshy - they are all multimillionaires thanks to social media.

Another advantage of social media is that we can stay in touch with relatives and friends who live far away from us and the only thing we would need is a good Internet connection.

One more amazing part of social media is that we can always stay up to date with the latest news no matter if we have missed the morning or night news on the TV, our friends and family on Facebook would probably share them if it is something scandalous enough, it would be all over Twitter in seconds.

These are only some of the pros of course and bearing in mind all that social media do for us, one can conclude that it really improves our lives.

However, it also comes with just as many disadvantages.

Social media is a great way to promote one's business but it also takes a lot of time.  Sometimes we have to spend more time on social media to attract and appeal to new audiences than actually do our job. It also isn't a one-time thing, it's a long-term relationship.

Additionally, there is the issue of cyberbullying.  Social media can help one deal with their mental illness but it can also cause one as well. There are people all over the Internet who take pleasure in insulting others online, not taking into consideration that behind the screen of a phone, computer, laptop or a tablet is sitting a real human being who also has feelings and can be hurt. What's worse is that sometimes people with depression and anxiety get cyberbullied as well which could lead to self-harm or even worse- ending their own lives.

Anonymity is a blessing and a curse. You can hide behind different nicknames on social media and you can allow yourself to say everything you cannot while being yourself. Unfortunately, a lot of people use this opportunity to throw obscenities at present and future successful people.

What is more, with social media and the excessive use of Photoshop, more and more people feel pressured to be something impossible because all they see all over the Internet are extremely photoshopped pictures of various models. This, in turn, has made the beauty standards impossible to be achieved by normal people who have regular nine-to-five jobs or go to school and cannot dedicate three hours to the gym every day. Even though so many of us know that these pictures are photoshopped and edited, that they are taken from a specific angle, some people still believe them and try to be like them.

Trying to live up to the unrealistic beauty standards have caused so many young and middle-aged people mental health issues and eating disorders which then scar them for life.

Social media is a great invention that comes with a lot of advantages and disadvantages. It can help us deal with our daily struggles by escaping reality but it can also cause us even more problems. We know what we are getting ourselves into from the beginning, we know that we will get addicted to all of these various platforms because social media give us the chance to be whoever we want from the comfort of our own homes. We can connect with people, create content, found a business and all of that while sitting on a chair at home or in a cafĂ©. Even though we come across cyberbullies from time to time we never give up on social media because it is a part of our lives and as many as the cons are, the pros are far more appealing and at the end of they, despite all the negativity, social media does improve our lives.

GAME REVIEW: My Hero One's Justice

Rating 5*

My Hero One’s Justice is  probably the best thing that could happen to My Hero Academia fans. It is based on the much-beloved anime and it couldn’t do better than it already has.
